10 things about adeline

Adeline...

1. Has monster feet and long fingers for a baby. Her extremities have been commented on by several nurses. Perhaps she will be tallish.

2. Likes to rock in her swing outside or at least in the sun. Puts her right to sleep.

3. Loves to STRETCH! After waking up she'll stretch out her legs, and then her arms, and arch back her head as far as I'll let her, and throw in a couple big yawns and grunts as well. We also have to take several breaks when eating so she can do said stretch routine, and fart/poop in the middle usually. Don't mind her.

4. Is somewhat dramatic. Sometimes she eats too fast and will start gasping for air like she's choking And. Can't. Breathe! After panicking the first couple times, I now calmly put her on my shoulder and pat her back, and she remembers that she is not in fact choking, and can breathe again.

5. Is a squeaker. When she wakes up, when she eats, and even when she sleeps she squeaks. Makes all kinds of crazy baby noises. Brian says this means she's going to be a talker. Look out.

6. Is unphased by hiccups. Many babies don't like getting hiccups - Adeline eats right through them. Girlfriend is on a mission.

7. Has been getting up twice a night to eat the past couple weeks : between 12am-1am and 4am-5am. And then goes right back to bed. I'm really hoping this continues.

8. Still keeps her hands up by her ears when she's sleeping, eating, and playing even. I'm sure this is the how she was positioned in the womb - I could feel her kicks up high, and little punches down low by her head. It's super cute.

9. Is going to be a month old on Friday, still fitting comfortably into newborn clothes, but is getting BIG! She is definitely getting some chubby cheeks now. I think she's going to weigh 7 lb 12 oz on Friday at her one month appointment. We'll see.

10. Has affectionately been nicknamed "Monster." In the sense that Brian calls and asks how Monster is doing. She's ever so sweet, but an eating machine!

baby update!

Just a quick update on how we're doing as a family of 3...err, I mean 4. (didn't mean to leave you out, Bella)

I'll try not to dote too much over how wonderful and gorgeous we think our little girl is because, naturally, we think she's the cutest of cute! But I'm sure how Brian and I are doing as new parents is way more entertaining that describing how Adeline is doing, so I promise to hit those points too...

So it's been 3 weeks now since Adeline was born, and we are doing fabulous. Fortunately, besides being cute as a button, Adeline has been a super good baby so far, and I hope this is not just a ploy of trickery at the moment. But I'm highly suspicious. Anyway, she eats like a monster, sleeps like a bear, and is happy as a clam in between. But to quote Brian's boss, "Oh don't worry, it's only a phase. She'll grow out of it." Well, for right now, we're counting our blessings.

Brian's been a huge help with feedings, diaper duty, and bath time. At this point I'd like to give a YAY shout out to helpful dads, and a HOW DO YOU DO IT shout to single moms. I also think it's time to revolutionize newborn care classes. Although I have not attended any, I'm pretty sure they don't teach you the useful things, such as how to feed your baby and make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, use the bathroom, or type a blog post at the same time, all of which (among other things) I've had to figure out on my own, but have mastered quite well.

Have I mentioned yet how absolutely adorable our baby is?

Clearly not due to our genetics, but we'll take what we can get. And obviously, she has us quite smitten. I had my first test of the "mother hen" instinct (I think I just made that up, by the way) when we had to take Adeline to the doctor during her first week of life for an eye infection. Apparently one of her ducts hadn't opened yet, which was causing the infection. Not that uncommon for a newborn. So the pediatrician looked at her eye and gave it a fancy diagnosis and referred her to an eye doctor, and said something about general anesthesia and probing if it didn't open. And although Adeline was completely unphased by her infection, upon hearing this prognosis I shed a few tears in the doctor's office (read: I bawled my eyes out - my baby was 7 days old and had an eye infection, the world was ending!) Fortunately, I was able to massage the duct open and it resolved itself rather quickly, before we even went to the eye doctor in fact. But I was quite traumatized. Over an eye infection. And I suppose this is only the beginning.

Being off work has been...strange. All of a sudden, daily accomplishment is not measured by building a wind farm or flying a satellite anymore - instead, if we were able to work in a 3 mile walk with Adeline and make it to Walmart to grocery shop, now that's an accomplished day! I'm only somewhat exaggerating, but we really have been doing quite well about getting out of the house. In the past three weeks, we've been able to go on a long walk almost every day, get Adeline's passport pictures, go on several shopping trips, show her off at a going away party, and even make it up to Fort Collins to see my sister run in the Fort Collins marathon this past weekend. And this coming weekend, we're driving down to Colorado Springs to visit my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew and see their new house. I'm hoping her (much appreciated!) compliance and complacency are early signs that she likes adventuring as much as we do.

We absolutely love having Adeline with us now and love her to death. But seriously, since when are cute little newborns allowed to get big? I think my baby's over 7 lbs now and is actually starting to fit in her newborn clothes -  I'm having a mild panic attack over here. But we're excited to see her start smiling, hold her head up, and roll over soon - just not too soon.

More to come!

Dinner Time!

Sometime last summer, on a camping trip with the Blocksmas, some random folks dropped off some trout they just caught, but since they didn't eat fish, they gave them to us.  The next weekend, Liz was kind enough to cook them up for all of us, and I believe that was the first time that I've ever eaten a whole fish.  I guess technically, I didn't eat the whole thing, but it was served whole.  You get my point... Anyways, the fish was freaking delicious, and every time I go shopping, I see those whole fish staring back at me with their googly eyes, but I've never tried to cook one myself.

Well today that changed.  I stopped by the ol' Supper-Dupper for some fresh veggies to grill up for dinner and saw some fresh trout just layin' around on the ice.  I decided, "what the hell, lets give it a go."  I grabbed two trout, some fresh herbs (a pre-made mixture of rosemary, sage, thyme, chives) and some lemons.  I stuffed a little bundle of herbs in the belly of each trout, then two slices of lemon in each belly as well as three on top of each fish.  I wrapped them in foil and threw them on the grill for 7-minutes per side.  Originally I planned on dressing up the plate to post a picture of my achievement, but I was too hungry, so this is all that was left.

I'll definitely do more whole fish in the future.  It was tender, delicious, and really freakin' easy.  I have to admit though, that I've let my hero, Tony Bourdain down, and I didn't eat the eyeballs.  Maybe next time...
